Commuting & Getting Around

Want to cut down your commute or plan your route? Here's how locals get around Miami Beach.

Major Highways

Thoroughfares such as I-95, Highway A1A, and Venetian Way connect Miami Beach to mainland Miami. Collins Avenue runs the length of the island, which makes it easy to travel from South Beach to Mid-Beach to North Beach.

Pedestrian Routes

Miami Beach offers a number of pedestrian bridges that make it easy to get around without a car or public transportation. The future Canopy will connect the Beachwalk, Baywalk, and public parks between the North and South sides of 5th Street.

Airports

The Miami International Airport is located on the mainland just 22 minutes west of Miami Beach. Private flights can also land at the nearby Miami Executive Airport.

Taxes & Civic Services

Taxes

Property taxes are based on the millage rate provided by the Miami-Dade County Tax Collection division. In Florida, property owners also enjoy a tax exemption on the first $25,000 of the assessed value of their permanent residence—this is referred to as a homestead exemption.

Driver Licenses

State law requires you to obtain a Florida driver’s license, register vehicles, and get new tags within 30 days of establishing residency. This can be accomplished at one of Miami Beach's local DMVs, but you will need to provide proof of liability. All motorized boats operated on Florida waters must also be registered and/or numbered with the state within 30 days.

Before registering to vote, you'll need to be a legal resident of Florida. You can register online, in-person, or by mail. Voter ID is required to vote, but non-ID holders can still vote with a provisional ballot.

Establishing Residency

To qualify for Florida residency, you'll need to live in the state for more than 183 days per year. Having a Florida driver's license and owning property makes the process easier. Filing a Declaration of Domicile is another helpful option.

Utilities

Florida Power & Light provides electrical power to all of South Florida. Peoples Gas (TECO) supplies most of Miami Beach's natural gas. You should also establish service with the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department. Internet and telephone providers can vary depending on your location, so give us a call for more information!

Schools

Miami Beach students are served by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the fourth largest public district in the United States. More than 356,000 children attend MDCPS's 467 institutions, some of which have been named the best schools in the country. Many graduates go on to attend Florida International University or the University of Miami.

Live Like a Local

Arts & Culture

Take a stroll near Ocean Drive, and you'll uncover Miami Beach's iconic Art Deco history. Here, architecturally significant buildings—like Fontainebleu and Eden Roc—represent the city's storied past. Miami Beach is also home to cultural destinations like the Bass Museum of Art.

Dining

Want to experience the best flavors of Miami Beach? Start by savoring fresh seafood at Joe's Stone Crab, then sample some inventive Southern fare at Yardbird Table & Bar. Locals also love Texas de Brazil, Smith & Wollensky, and Barton G. The Restaurant.

Nightlife

It's no secret that Miami Beach's SoBe district possesses some of the most lively nightlife in the world. And if you want to take a tour of the area's scenic clubs and bars, we recommend Nikki Beach, LIV at Fontainebleu, Voodoo Lounge, The Regent Cocktail Club, or Kill Your Idol.

Shopping

Indulge in some retail therapy right here in Miami Beach! Explore Lincoln Road, an upscale promenade dotted with chic shops, cafes, bars, and art galleries. Fifth and Alton serves as one of the area's largest indoor malls, anchored by name-brands like Publix and Best Buy. You can also travel to mainland Miami to experience the iconic Bayside Marketplace.

Healthcare

Miami Beach is home to some of the most advanced hospitals in the entire nation. Mount Sinai Medical Center is the largest healthcare facility on the island, though many residents also seek care at Mercy Hospital or the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics in Miami.

Events

Ready to relish in some of Miami's most exciting events? There's never a shortage of things to do and places to see when you call the Magic City home. Popular options include the South Beach Jazz Festival, Art Deco Weekend, the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, and Carnaval.
